Children's Cancer Institute Extends Congratulations to Australia’s New Government

14 May 2025

Children’s Cancer Institute warmly congratulates the Albanese Government on their election victory and being officially sworn in to lead the nation.

The Albanese Government has been a strong supporter of childhood cancer research, generously announcing $112.6 million over three years in March 2025 to the ZERO Childhood Cancer Program, led by the Children’s Cancer Institute and the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital.

This critical investment will ensure that children diagnosed with cancer from 0 to 18 years will continue to have access to world-leading precision medicine, while expanding access to adolescents and young adults aged 19 to 25 with paediatric-type cancers.

However, systemic challenges — particularly the funding of direct and indirect costs of research — continue to impact the broader medical research sector, including Children’s Cancer Institute. Without urgent government support, the long-term sustainability of Australia’s medical research institutes — and the life-saving work they undertake — is at significant risk.

We are committed to working closely with the new Government to address these challenges and to ensure every child diagnosed with cancer has the best possible chance of survival, moving toward a future free from this devastating disease.

Children’s Cancer Institute also extends its congratulations to Hon Sussan Ley MP on her election as Leader of the Opposition.

We also offer our best wishes to all newly elected and re-elected Members of Parliament and Senators across all parties and the crossbench, and thank them for their service to the Australian community.

Children’s Cancer Institute is looking forward to continuing to build strong and productive partnerships with the Government, Opposition, and members across the political spectrum to advance the future of childhood cancer research in Australia.
