Children’s Cancer Institute is proud to be the first Australian medical research institute (and only the second organisation in Australia) to join the internationally recognised Technician Commitment.
This pledge ensures the equity, strength, and longevity of our critical technical workforce—an essential step in achieving our vision of curing every child of cancer.
Empowering Our Technical Workforce
Technology and innovation in medical research are rapidly evolving, requiring professionals with highly specialised skill sets. Historically, these vital roles haven't aligned with traditional academic pathways, resulting in challenges around visibility, recognition, and career progression.
By joining a global community of over 120 organisations, we are pledging to support the ongoing career sustainability of the non-academic scientists, engineers, technical specialists, and research assistants who make our "Team Science" approach possible.
Our Core Commitments
Co-designed for technicians by technicians, we have developed a strategic roadmap to integrate the four pillars of the Technician Commitment into our operational framework.
| Pillar | Our Focus |
| Visibility | Ensuring all technicians are identifiable and their vital contributions are visible both within and beyond the institution. |
| Recognition | Supporting technical staff to gain formal recognition through professional registration and external award schemes. |
| Sustainability | Ensuring the future sustainability of technical skills and making sure unique technical expertise is fully utilised. |
| Career Development | Enabling tangible career progression opportunities through clear, well-documented career pathways. |
The Technician Commitment is fundamentally about respect and recognition for anyone that has developed a unique, technical skillset that supports Children's Cancer Institute to achieve its research objectives.
