We are taking part in River's Race to raise funds for Children's Cancer Institute

River's Race is a community event in loving memory of River Watkins - and for all kids with DMG/DIPG.

River was diagnosed with DMG/DIPG a month before his 8th birthday. Devastatingly, River passed away less than 3 weeks after his diagnosis in the early hours of the morning after his birthday.

DMG/DIPG has been described as the Mt Everest of cancers. Occurring in the midline of the brain and infiltrating the surrounding healthy tissue, these tumours are inoperable and untreatable. A finding of DMG/DIPG is the worst possible diagnosis for a child and their family as there is no hope – families are generally told to go home and make memories and the median survival time is 9 months.

While there is no cure for DMG/DIPG, Children's Cancer Institute are making major inroads. For the first time ever, there is hope on the horizon for the families of children diagnosed with this disease. Let’s close the funding gap and change the future of kids with DMG.

Twelve months ago, our friends, Rob & Chantal received the devastating news that no parent should ever have to hear — their precious 7-year-old son, River, had inoperable and incurable brain cancer.

River was diagnosed with Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG), a devastating cancer with no cure and very limited treatment options. He was given a prognosis of just 12 months, but heartbreakingly, River passed away only a few short weeks later, on his 8th birthday. 💔🌈

This is simply not good enough. More research into this devastating cancer is desperately needed. Each year, DMG takes the lives of around 20 Australian children, and research can only continue with funding.

That’s why we are taking part in River’s Race on 20 September — to honour River’s life, support his family and help raise vital funds for research, with the hope that one day there will be better treatment options and, ultimately, a cure.
