I'm running a total of 200km in the month of June to help find a cure for childhood cancer
When I was 19, I found a lump on my neck. My GP and ENT were convinced it would be a harmless thyroid nodule. After the biopsy results came back inconclusive, I decided to have it removed. Two weeks later we found out it was a multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma. This cancer is unusual in young people and there was no consensus of the best treatment. Three months later, after a lot of consultations, I had further surgery to remove half of my thyroid and another nodule. Shortly afterwards we discovered the second nodule was also a carcinoma. Thankfully, a year later, no new nodules have appeared.
These uncertain months of doctors, hospitals, and recovery were scary and difficult as a 19-year-old trying to maintain a normal teenage life. I am very grateful to my doctor and my family and friends for supporting me through that tough time.
Right now, a beautiful family friend of mine is fighting a much scarier cancer. A whole other level of this awful disease. This close-knit, loving family is doing everything possible, and I can only imagine the stress and pain they are living with; I wish I could ease their heartache.
My experience last year and witnessing the battle my friends are in the midst of, made me want to do something to show my support for them and the many families fighting childhood cancers.
Across the month of June, I will be running 200km (keeping track on strava @dixiemcnaught). That’s over 6.6 km a day. It will be physically and mentally challenging, but nothing compared to what families and children impacted by childhood cancer go through.
