I'm taking part in River's Race to raise funds for Children's Cancer Institute
River's Race is a community event in loving memory of River Watkins - and for all kids with DMG/DIPG.
River was an exceptional kid who should have had the chance to grow up and live a big and beautiful life. Devastatingly, River was diagnosed with DMG and passed away less than 3 weeks after his diagnosis on his 8th birthday.
DMG/DIPG has been described as the Mt Everest of cancers. Occurring in the midline of the brain and infiltrating the surrounding healthy tissue, these tumours are inoperable and untreatable. A finding of DMG/DIPG is the worst possible diagnosis for a child and their family as there is no hope – families are told to go home and make memories and the median survival time is 9 months.
While there is no cure for DMG/DIPG, Children's Cancer Institute are making major inroads. For the first time ever, there is hope on the horizon for the families of children diagnosed with this disease. Let’s close the funding gap and change the future of kids with DMG/DIPG.

Happy Birthday River
Tuesday 1st SepIn August last year, I had the deep privilege of meeting River’s incredible family.
Throughout this past month, River’s beautiful mum has generously shared his story with us—showing us how joyfully he lived and introducing us to the magical, sweet little boy he was. (Instagram @rivers_race)
River was diagnosed with DMG, an aggressive form of childhood brain cancer, and within weeks, his family faced the unimaginable heartbreak of saying goodbye.
This September, River’s Race is raising vital funds for DMG/DIPG research, helping researchers continue their work towards better treatments—and ultimately, a cure.
August was River’s birthday, and September is mine 🫶
So, on this first day of September, I’m signing up for River’s Race with my beautiful family… and I’m boldly asking our friends, colleagues and anyone else who feels moved by River’s story to make a donation in his honour.
The goal is to raise $100,000, and an incredible $72,605 has already been raised.
