Biography
Professor Andrew Roberts is Deputy Director and laboratory head at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, a clinical hematologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Metcalf Chair of Leukaemia Research at the University of Melbourne. He is currently a Director of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Alliance, member of the Scientific Advisory Board, South Australian Immunigenomics Cancer Institute (SAiGENCI) and chairs the Life Saving Drug Program Expert Panel for the Australian government. Previous board-level appointments include Past President of the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand, Chair of the board of Cancer Council Victoria and a Director of the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group (clinical trials collaborative). His laboratory and clinical research focusses on novel approaches to therapy for hematological malignancies, and pioneered the way for venetoclax, the first in a new class of targeted anti-cancer drug, to become a routine treatment for selected leukemias. For this work, he and colleagues have received multiple awards, including the Australian Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation in 2019. His many plenary talks include the Ham Wasserman Lecture at the American Society of Hematology annual meeting in 2020. He is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Academy of Health and Medical Science and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Blood.
Professor Roberts joined the Board in 2026.
