I am taking part in 86K for a Cure to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
Every month, 86 children are diagnosed with cancer in Australia. In 2022, our world stopped when our son Tom was diagnosed with metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma — a rare and aggressive cancer that had already spread to his lungs. He was just 7 years old. His diagnosis came only days before Christmas — a time meant for excitement and celebration, but instead filled with fear, heartbreak, and the unknown.
Tom began intensive treatment immediately: a 54-week protocol consisting of 35 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which ultimately took 64 long weeks to complete. Hospital became our second home. There were moments of hope, but there were also countless hard days, as Tom endured severe side effects and pain no child should ever have to face. Even now, nearly two years since finishing treatment, Tom continues to undergo frequent scans and lives with both the physical and emotional scars of his journey.
Despite it all, Tom’s smile, courage, and strength remind us that every day is precious, and that no family should have to walk this path alone. That’s why I’m walking 86 km this March — for Tom, for the 86 children diagnosed each month, and for a future where no child has to endure the devastating impact of cancer.
