Bright Strands for a Brighter Future
Each year in Australia, over 130 children are diagnosed with brain cancer.
Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among Australian children and adolescents and the leading cause of cancer death in people under 40.
May is Brain Cancer Awareness Month and for us, it is extremely close to our hearts. In July 2022, we lost our beloved son, Matt to brain cancer.
Last year I shaved my head to raise funds for Matty's Hope. This May, I will be adding a splash of colour (pink? purple? blue?) to what little hair I have been able to grow back.
Matty's Hope is a research project conducted by the Children's Cancer Institute into Glioblastoma H3G34R, a rare and aggressive brain cancer.
For 40 years, the Children's Cancer Institute has been conducting research into the causes, prevention and cure of childhood cancer, with ground breaking work in Leukemia treatment and recent successes in pioneering the DIPG clinical trial known as Levi's Catch and the Zero Childhood Cancer program, providing a beacon of hope for young patients and their families.
The aim of Matty's Hope is to improve our understanding of and develop new treatments for the devastating disease of Glioblastoma H3G34R and other forms of brain cancer. Through focused drug discovery efforts, the research involves testing drug compounds against H3G34R with the most promising drugs being taken on for further testing. Additionally, the project aims to identify vulnerabilities that will help researchers uncover what drives the growth of H3G34R at the molecular and genetic levels.
