Support our Challenge to Help Kids with Cancer!

We're taking part in 86K for a Cure to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

Every month, 86 children are diagnosed with cancer. There is usually no known cause, treatment can go on for many years and it puts an enormous strain on family life.

So we're taking on this challenge throughout March for the 86 children who are diagnosed with cancer each month in Australia.

Together, we can help find a cure for childhood cancer and create safer, more effective treatments.

We are halfway through the 86k for a Cure and wow, what a couple weeks it has been! Louie continues to work on his leg through stretches, movement, exercise and hydrotherapy. We arent yet seeing muscle growth but we know this can take a long time, but what we are seeing is strength! Even more importantly, Louie is less and less reliant on his crutches and "walking" in a much more cohesive way. Next week he is due some mid month bloods and a chemo dosage review where it will be interesting to see what his blood cells are up to! Louie has been able to attend school 3.5 days this week including completing Naplan. Louie's legends have me feeling so humbled, proud and grateful. The Kms have kept in a good position on the leaderboard but more than that... the team has consistently smashed the team fundraising goals. Keep up the excellent effort as we go into week 3 everyone. To those donating... a thank you is not nearly enough but know what we are. The money donated is so important for Louie, other children experiencing their own ordeals and those who haven't yet had their diagnosis. I truly believe in how important this is. "it's not an if but when" 🙏🎗🧡

Charlie and I have been up early walking to get our km’s. I’m on late shifts this week so we thought 6am walks would help add to our km’s 😊 very proud of charlie and samson! 🐶

Saturday 28th
Tomorrow the big challenge begins! The Children's Cancer Institue's 86km for the 86 children diagnosed with cancer every month. Last night, whilst many children were playing sports, watching TV, having family time or just enjoying childhood, Louie spent the evening at the Women's and Children's emergency department. He wasn't unwell, hurt or bleeding, he spiked a fever alongside his sister. But whilst she got to stay home, have some panadol and sit under the fan to cool down, he got a round trip to the ED because a fever in a child with cancer is a potentially serious event and must be investigated. These trips to the ED have historically been quite stressful and led to long admissions. Fortunately, this time, Louie was presenting quite well except a runny nose and blood tests revealed him to have robust immune cells present meaning the doctors were happy to take a fairly relaxed approach and discharge him home with a course of oral antibiotics. And whilst I am very grateful for a good outcome, a positive ED experience and being able to sleep in our own bed, last night was a stark reminder about life in cancer treatment, the risks, the anxiety, how a simple cold is never simple in an immunosuppressed child. It is for Louie that I am doing this challenge but more than that, it is so that research and innovation can continue. It is so that treatment protocols that are 50+ decades old are replaced with effective, humane, kinder treatments but also treatments that are designed for CHILDREN rather than for adults and adapted to children. It is so there is a future where children and parents do not have to experience the horror and trauma that Louie has bravely faced. So, to my team, who have readily and enthusiastically joined, set their target kms and their fundraising goals... thank you! Let's walk, run, swim our way to some epic goals. To any one else reading this, I hope you enjoy following along, reading my updates and supporting Louie's Legends.
