Support my Challenge to Help Kids with Cancer!
I am taking part in 86K for a Cure to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
A little bit about me and why this challenge is so important - I originally signed up to do the first 86K in February 2022 mainly as a favour to my friend Nadia who at the time was working in fundraising at the Children’s Cancer Institute. I also thought that it sounded like an awesome challenge to improve my running but also because cancer is a cause close to my heart having organised the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia’s Annual Congress for the last 11 years. Cancer Nurses are basically angels!
However, it was during March 2022 when I was about 60km into the challenge that we found out that our good friend’s 3 year old daughter, Lucy, had been diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma - a rare and aggressive type of bone cancer. The statistic of “86 kids will be diagnosed each month with a childhood cancer” was suddenly the impossible reality for the beautiful Galvin family.
Fast forward 2 years and thankfully, due to the funds raised and amazing research happening at the Children’s Cancer Institute, Lucy is now in remission and is one of this year’s ambassadors for 86k for a cure!
This challenge is now even more important to me having seen first hand how precision medicine really is changing the outcomes for kids like Lucy.
I can’t wait to see how much money we can raise this year for this amazing cause!
