Give children with cancer more Christmases

A life should be long and full of possibilities. Please give today to help more children with cancer regain the simple things, like another Christmas with their family. Together we can cure all children of cancer.
When children are diagnosed with cancer they lose all the simple things that make a childhood joyous, overnight.

Your gift this Christmas will give more children like Ka’ili the chance to regain the simple things. Warm showers, best friends’ hugs, ponytails and more Christmases with their family.

A life should be long.

Will allow us to test a drug on a cell line of a child’s cancer, to see how they respond and if the drug has the potential to be used as a treatment.
$250
Will cover the cost of a blood-based minimal residual disease (MRD) test for one child, allowing us to monitor the progress of their disease and possible predict relapse.
$500
Allows us to do a functional genomic analysis of a tumour, to understand how the cells behave and determine if a certain genetic change is responsible for cancer growth.

Ka'ili's story

At just four years old, Ka’ili was taken to hospital where a scan revealed a tumour the size of a rockmelon in her kidney, and she was given a diagnosis of Wilms’ tumour.

Ka'ili had a central line surgically inserted into her chest to receive treatment at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick. This had to be kept dry, so one of the first things Ka'ili lost was the freedom to have a shower. Then Ka'ili lost her hair, and because she couldn't go to school, she lost her friends.

Just short of a year after her treatment began, Ka’ili relapsed. This time, she was to face six months of intensive chemotherapy, along with radiation therapy and a bone marrow transplant.

Ka’ili was enrolled on the Zero Childhood Cancer Program (ZERO) and the team was able to identify a drug to target Ka’ili’s cancer. Five months later, Ka’ili was in remission.

Your gift this Christmas will support research like ZERO, and give more children like Ka’ili the chance to enjoy more Christmases with their family.

Watch the video to hear Kristy , Ka’ili’s mum, talk about her daughter’s journey with childhood cancer and the importance of supporting our research.

Every child is unique

The principle behind ZERO is simple but radical. Instead of treating all children with the same type of tumour in the same way, we are taking a personalised approach.

Samples from every child enrolled on ZERO are subjected to comprehensive analyses in our laboratories, including whole genome sequencing and RNA sequencing. This in-depth analysis is generating huge amounts of data that have simply never been available before. As a result, ZERO is providing unprecedented insights into childhood cancer.

When ZERO’s first national clinical trial began, the focus was identifying new treatment options for children with less than 30% chance of survival.
Since then, ZERO has made an incredible difference for children with cancer and their families. There are children are alive today who almost certainly would have died had they not taken part in this trial. Children like Ka’ili.

With your help, we will expand ZERO – by the end of 2023 the program will be available to all Australian children with cancer.
With your help, we will continue find cures for the three Australian children still dying from their cancer every week.

"To me, ZERO in its simplest form is providing hope to families, where hope didn’t exist before.

We’ve made big strides with the program but we need to work harder and go further for Ka’ili and all the other new kids with cancer that come to us."
