| Children's Cancer Institute Australia's (CCIA) vision is to save the lives of all children with cancer and eliminate their suffering.
Our mission is to be a leader in preventing cancer, to find new ways of curing cancer in children through world-class research, to ensure the best possible quality of life for these children and their families, to share the vision with others and to increase awareness, participation and funding.
Research Since the construction of our first laboratory in 1984, CCIA’s research effort has grown to encompass ten major research programs. These research programs focus on translational research that represents a broad and well-integrated approach directed at improving the outcome of all children with cancer.
Since 1999, under the leadership of Prof Michelle Haber, CCIA has more than doubled its research capacity. The increasing awareness of both the standard of our research and the talents of our dynamic team of scientists has helped us to forge strong collaborative links with research and medical teams throughout the world. CCIA is closely affiliated with the Sydney Children’s Hospital and the University of New South Wales and collaborates with research institutes and hospitals throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Europe and North America.
As a measure of CCIA’s excellence in the field of medical research, our scientists attract a high level of state, national and international competitive peer-reviewed grant funding. In addition, our research features in the some of the world’s leading medical and scientific journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Blood, The Journal of Clinical Oncology and The Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Fundraising While we are extremely proud of the increased success that the Institute has achieved in attracting external funding from peer-review, industry and government sources, the greatly enhanced research capacity achievable as a result of these funds paradoxically means that we rely even more heavily on community support. It is widely accepted that for every dollar of peer-reviewed funding that is spent directly on undertaking individual research projects, a further dollar is needed to provide the infrastructure, supplies, equipment and technologies needed to support that project.
So as our research effort expands to allow ever greater inroads into the problem of childhood cancer, the contributions of the community and corporate sector are increasingly important in terms of sustaining and broadening our enhanced research productivity. The generosity of those who are committed to our vision of one day curing all childhood cancer is greatly appreciated by all those associated with the Institute.
