Cancer Cell Development Group

Group Leader: Dr Karen MacKenzie (biography)

RESEARCH AREAS
Cancer cell immortality
Haematopoietic stem cells and cancer

This Group aims to understand the mechanisms that regulate cell division, cell life span and the processes by which normal cells develop into cancer cells. This knowledge will provide a platform for developing targeted therapies for childhood cancer.

STUDENT PROJECTS

  • Regulation of the Inhibitor of Apoptosis family member, surviving, during cellular immortalisation
  • The regulation of telomerase in neuroblastoma
  • Anti-apoptotic mechanisms involved in cancer cell immortalisation
  • Examination of telomerase activity and telomere length changes in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
  • The regulation and function of telomerase components in normal leukaemic myeloid cells
  • The regulation of telomere length in haematopoietic cells
